Himmat was established over 25 years ago as a small local resource in Halifax working with disadvantaged and excluded young people whose families were mostly of South Asian origin. These young people were either involved with, or at risk of involvement in, the local criminal justice system. At the time services were not geared up to meet the challenges posed by these youngsters, neither were they best equipped to support their families. By working in partnership with the local Council, Probation and a local voluntary organisation (Calderdale Asian Youth Association) we were able to make a difference.
In the following years, Himmat became a highly successful and diverse organisation, working mainly in Bradford and Calderdale and in partnership with the Probation Service, local Youth Offending Teams, Social Care, the Youth Service and Bradford Education. We became multi faceted, providing consistently good and some award winning services. We provided support, guidance, recreation, education and sports facilities and thrive in a world creating positive activities for families and young people.
Himmat's core work:-
To promote good health and well being within the most disadvantaged communities
To deliver high quality youth and community work, often engaging the hardest to reach
To provide challenges, new opportunities and support to enable young people to raise their aspirations, broaden their horizons and believe in themselves.
